French companies have spent a little more than 102 billion euros for their computers in 2008 (EITO). Spending growth has reached 3% in 2008 (Pierre Audoin Council and Syntec) in net slowdown compared to 2007.
 ... But 54% of people trained
Despite this gloomy economic climate, companies are increasingly using open source tools. According to our measurements, the number of trainees has been multiplied by 3 between 2005 and 2008, up 54% between late 2007 and late 2008.
 Industrialization of open source
Beyond the distinctive technical characteristics of OSS, this good performance is the result of open source in a phase of industrialization: the high volumes remain stable for mature technologies (infrastructure, development, etc..) And that technologies that were being adopted in previous years (including software and decision-making) saw volume grow.
 92% of the companies fulfilled
According to two studies published in November 2008 by analysis firms Gartner and Forrester, 85% of companies use one or more open source software. The remaining 15% are to deploy at least one by the end of 2009. Of the 85% of corporate users, 92% were satisfied and 45% use open source software for their critical applications. The three main reasons are a return on investment (ROI) faster, speed of implementation, and independence from suppliers.
 Expansion of training catalog
The trends observed since September 2007 are confirmed. The training courses are targeted at a more broad. After the developers, administrators and other DBA (still the majority of people trained), training organizations welcome users and functional managers. This trend is evident in the segment of functional software (ERP, decision-making) and software infrastructure: CMS, ECM, EDM.

The spending will increase only by 1.3% in 2009 (against 3% in 2008). For four consecutive quarters that businesses expect to invest, resulting in a sustained and marked slowdown expected in all areas of computing. However, according to market Open Source, all companies use one or more program (s) free (s) in 2020. The economic crisis should accelerate this trend. The 2020 study Floss roadmap provides that 40% of jobs depend on computer software in 2020, 1.2 million scientists. As the figures in this 4th edition of the observatory software free, all technologies will not know the same growth. Some areas will emerge only in 2009 while others will reach their maturity period.
